In the current state of SEO, backlinks are still key, but google as gotten keen on people gaming the system. So now it matters where you exactly how the backlinks are done. Google will aggregate all the backlinks you have going to your site, and figure out if your backlinking is natural or fake (seo'd), based on the overall weight of how you do them. In this article we will focus on backlink variation. Let's take an example so this is easier to understand. Let's say you launched site called www.outdoorfurnituresuperstore.com, and your major terms are of course "outdoor furniture", "outside furniture", but probably a hundred other terms including "outdoor table set", "outdoor sofa", etc... The anchor text of your backlinks cannot be your major keyword phrases anymore, because Google sees that as fake. So those top search terms above should not really be used in the anchor text except with variation in other terms. For example, when creating your SEO backlinks, vary the anchor text to always include one or two other keywords that make the keyword phrase more natural. Some examples are "outdoor furniture for my home", "outdoor furniture Miami fl", "outdoor sofa for 2", "outdoor sofa for 3". The more you vary the keyword phrase in the anchor text the better. About 50% to 60% or more of your backlinks should be like that. What about the rest of the backlinks? Most of the rest of the backlinks should be your brand name of your store, so use "www.outdoorfurnituresuperstore.com", "outdoor furniture superstore", or "outdoor furniture superstore online store"..these are call "brand terms" If you look at any natural linked site, like walmart.com for example, the predominant number of links are actually from customers, not SEO because they have so many customers and they don't actually need to have as much orchestrated seo because of this. So the backlinking as I described above, a combo of branded terms plus thousands of keyword phrases" makes up the portfolio of natural linking. And lastly, natural linking still includes anchor texts with phrases like "click here", "check it out", "follow this for more info" type backlinks too. Overall, don't worry about stuffing your keywords in your anchor text. This is what Google penalizes sits for now, and this is what a lot of the Penguin, Panda, etc.. type penalties came into play. Google will figure out what your site is about by mostly looking at the content on your site. Backlinks nowadays have to look natural in their overall footprint in the web sphere, or else google will ignore your backlinks, penalize you, or worse delist your site.
